Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
The latest offering of the UAE, the Etihad Museum in Jumeirah gives visitors a view of UAE’s short yet exciting history. It was established at the end of 2016 and aims to collect, preserve and display the heritage of the UAE across all its areas. The museum was previously known as the Union House and was the site where the rulers of the Emirates signed a declaration in 1971 that formed the UAE as we know it, today. It was then that the seven Emirates joined together to form the United Arab Emirates.
The museum building has a beautiful curved roof, inspired by the shape of a manuscript, with seven columns. Each of these seven columns is built to resemble the pens used to sign the declaration. There are eight different pavilions, each depicting a particular part of the declaration. The museum was designed by Canadian architects Moriyama and Teshima. It was inaugurated on the special occasion of the 45th National Day in the UAE and is currently managed by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. A 123-meter golden pole is situated at the entrance and hoists the UAE flag, which makes the building easy to locate.
Your Experience
The new building has been tastefully constructed and is another testament to the incredible architectural prowess of the UAE. The lighting is stunning in the darkness and the entire area presents a grand spectacle. Looking through the numerous exhibits will take about 3 hours in total.
Several photographs, videos, documents and interactive displays are located inside the museum and will give you an idea of the history of the country. Artifacts from the founding fathers of the country are on display within the grand and opulent interiors. Old passports and personal items such as pocket watches, letters, stamps, rings and other similar items belonging to the rulers of the UAE are on display to the public at the museum.
You will also come across a richly decorated library, with hundreds of photography books in particular. The visual aids will help you understand the history of the country better. You can learn about the time between 1968 and 1974, which is when the country developed during these formative years. You can also understand the responsibilities, rights, and privileges that have been bestowed upon the people of the UAE that are unique to this country.
There is also a beautiful garden situated outside the museum, perfect for a walk when you are done exploring the museum. You could head to the restaurant in the museum, where you can grab a quick bite if needed.
