Containing deep roots in the pre-Christian history of Mesoamerica, the Basilica of Guadalupe is considered the world’s holiest. Also called ‘La Villa’ this beloved shrine welcomes more than 20 million pilgrims each year, making it one of the most visited places in the world. Walk around the beautiful buildings within the complex and learn all about the Virgin's history, her appearances, and the crucial role she played in Mexican culture. Climb up the Tepeyac Hill, a cherished site remembered for when the Virgin Mary herself appeared in front of Juan Diego, a peasant Indian, and asked for a church to be built on the sacred site. You will also visit the Museum of the Basilica, located in the old Capuchin convent, where a large collection of Novo-Hispanic art and cultural items await to be discovered. Enjoy some free time to explore and marvel, or maybe even attend the mass if so you wish.
