A half-day cycling tour is one of the best ways to get around the flat terrain of Kyoto. Hop on a cycle and enjoy the labyrinth of roads with an expert guide.
Marvel at Heian-Jingu Shrine and Nanzenji Temple
Upon cycling along the banks of the Kamo River, you'll reach Heian-Jingu Shrine. Built in 1895 to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto. Check out the massive orange 'torii', one of the tallest gates in Japan. Interact with locals and see their daily routines up close, such as the art of crafting tea canisters, handmade paper, curtains, and much more.
As you navigate the quaint canals, you'll eventually find yourself at Nanzenji Temple. The timber-constructed Zen temple exudes an aura of serenity and minimalism, drawing visitors from all over the world. The temple is known for its stone garden and multiple sub-temples within the temple. Beyond the garden lies the aqueduct, set against the forested Higashiyama mountains.
Walk Down the Path of Philosophy
Pedal off towards the 'Path of Philosophy', named after Professor Nishida Kitarō, who is said to have meandered lost in thought along the path. Look out for signs pointing off the path (following these will lead you to beautiful temples and shrines). Visit during the cherry blossom season to see the path lined up with beautiful cherry trees. As you cycle back towards Kyoto Station, enjoy the scenic beauty of the quaint and charming traditional teahouses and bathhouses.
