Ten men in spartan army uniforms against a dark background bring forth an avalanche of emotions and the horror of war in ‘All is Calm: Christmas Truce of 1914’. The musical drama, directed and written by Peter Rothstein, narrates the unique truce in the World War I when almost 100,000 soldiers called for a truce to celebrate Christmas across enemy lines. The production banks on the brilliant cast and the stark stage effects, no more than a hint of snow and props, to evoke the feeling of being at the frontline. All is Calm is a wonderful show that pays homage to an extraordinary event!
All is Calm: Broadway Story
The Christmas Truce of 1914 is a landmark event in the World War I that gained mythical status over the years in history. It was the winter of 1914 on the Western Front, and the British and German soldiers were fighting it out in the trenches along Ypres and Belgium. On Christmas Eve, the German soldiers decorated their trenches with candles and Christmas trees and sang carols.
A strange thing happened, the British soldiers reciprocated with carols and both the sides called for a ceasefire and instead crossed into No Man’s Land. They greeted each other, mourned for the martyrs and even exchanged gifts. All is Calm captures the mood of that night when peace reigned, and the weary soldiers celebrated what could only be a Christmas Miracle! The musical narrates the stories of these men through letters, poems, and music in the words of the soldiers themselves.
