Caroline, or Change, a through-composed musical that blends spirituals, Motown, blues, classical music, Jewish klezmer and folk music, is making its long-awaited return to Broadway. Jeanine Tessori and Tony Kushner's explosive musical is brought to life by transcendent tunes and a larger-than-life imagination.
The emotion-heavy story follows an African-American maid working for a Jewish family in 1963 Louisiana. An unforgettable theatrical experience, Caroline, or Change explores how, in times of transformation, even the simplest acts can make a huge impact. The musical is scheduled to begin previews at Studio 54 on 13 March 2020.
Caroline, or Change: About The Show
Caroline, or Change, created by Pulitzer Prize winner and Academy Award nominee, Tony Kushner, is being revived on Broadway after a critically acclaimed run at West End. The musical returns to Broadway after a gap of almost 16 years with the last production at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in May 2004.
In 2007, the musical won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The 2019 West End production won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Sharon D Clarke. Clarke, who is also known for roles in British dramas like Doctor Who and Holby City, will be leading the Broadway production as well. She'll be joined on stage by Caissie Levy, Samantha Williams, John Cariani, Tamika Lawrence, and others.
The musical features book and lyrics by Tony Kushner and music by Jeanine Tesori. Michael Longhurst, the director of the West End, is also transferring to the Broadway production.
Caroline, or Change: The Story
Caroline, or Change opens in the year 1963. Caroline, a black woman working as a maid for the Gellman family, earns a measly $30 a week. She is particularly close to Gellman’s 8-year old son, Noah. The two become close after Noah's mother's death and share a secret, which involves him lighting one cigarette a day for his caretaker. Caroline is a mother to four children and works hard to provide the best life that she possibly can, given her means. The careless Noah often forgets money in his pants and Caroline finds it while washing them.
Rose, Noah’s stepmother, warns him that Caroline will keep any money that she finds in his pockets in order to teach him a lesson and also give Caroline some extra income. To help Caroline, Noah intentionally leaves his comic book money in his pocket. What impact will their friendship face when Caroline keeps the money left in Noah’s pockets?
