Time and again, history has been unkind to female personalities, writing them out of the books, even the writers and poets! Emilia is the story of Emilia Bassano, Shakespeare’s muse but long due to being celebrated for her role as one of the first female published poets in the world. This riveting play is a peek into the past of Emilia’s life and her influence on Shakespeare's most iconic plays, and a rousing call for action for women of today to take control of their own narratives. Watch Emilia with its all-female cast and crew at the Vaudeville Theatre this summer to be inspired and to ensure no woman is ever unheard!

About the Show

Emilia is written by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm whose earlier acclaimed works have been ‘Belongings’ and ‘The Wasp.’ The all-female cast is led by the three actresses who play Emilia at various stages of her life – Saffron Coomber, Jenni Maitland, and Clare Perkins. They are joined by Adelle Leonce, Charity Wakefield, Nadia Albina, and Anna Adresen. Nicole Charles directs the play with choreography by Anna Morrissey and costume design by Joanna Scotcher. The show was commissioned for the Shakespeare Globe Theatre by Michelle Terry.

The Story

Emilia narrates the story of a female poet who has suffered the fate of female artists throughout history as many others – of not being celebrated enough! Emilia Bassano Lanier is an Elizabethan woman who was born to a Venetian Court Musician. She donned several hats through her life, as a mistress at 18 to Lord Chamberlain and later to Henry Carey, a wife to musician Alphonso Lanier and rumored to be the muse of Shakespeare as his ‘Dark Lady.’

Not much has been described of her life, except for the fact that in 1611, she published a book of poems ‘Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum’ that put her in the hallowed portals of the first few female published poets. The play discovers Emilia’s role in influencing Shakespeare’s work including creating a namesake character in the play Othello. Watch Emilia to find out more about this brilliant poet whom the world never got to know more of!
