About the Show
Hairspray is one of the biggest hits in theatre history and has won eight Tony Awards and four Laurence Olivier Awards for its original productions. The musical has been inspired from John Water’s 1988 film of the same name. The uplifting and feel-good production was well received by both critics and audiences, and has performed in various productions throughout the world.
The musical set in the 1960s uses nostalgia and plays with colors in costumes and sets to create a vibrant era that was defined by pop music and individuality. It also explores multiple themes through its characters with the underlying theme of fighting against discrimination of any kind, be it size, race, or sexuality. It is a message that is eternal and makes the musical relevant to any day and age.
Michael Ball will be reprising his role as Tracy Turnblad for which he was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor. He is known for his other roles in ‘Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,’ ‘Passion,’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.’ Watch Hairspray at the London Coliseum for an entertaining night out with the entire family.
The Story
Hairspray is a two-act musical that is set in June 1962 in Baltimore, USA. The story is about a plus-sized high-schooler, Tracy Turnblad, who is obsessed with the local dance show ‘The Corny Collins Show’. She is an exuberant girl who loves to dance and can be spotted easily thanks to her big hairdo that needs a lot of hairspray! Life takes a turn when one of the show members drops out for ‘9 months’ and auditions are announced for a new member.
Tracy’s mother Edna is herself plus-sized but unlike her daughter, is an introvert who never gets out of her house. Edna worries that Tracy will be laughed off for her size at the show and refuses to give permission for the auditions. Tracy doesn’t stop and gets the permission from her father Wilbur, but true to her mother’s prediction, is rejected due to her size.
Things start to change when Tracy meets teenage heartthrob Link on the show, who falls for her too. Corny, the main member of the show, watches Tracy dance at the school and brings her to the show which makes Tracy instantly popular. But Tracy has plans to use her fame well and make sure the show offers an equal platform irrespective of size, race, and sexuality. Watch the big-hearted Tracy find a way to make the show ‘now and forevermore’ racially integrated and find out if Link becomes her foreverafter!
