One of the most celebrated musicals of all time, Hello, Dolly! is headed back to West End after a blockbuster run on Broadway. Hello, Dolly! premiered on Broadway in 1964 at the St. James Theatre. A year later, the show made its West End debut at the Theatre Royal. The musical reached the peak of its popularity in 2017 when it opened on Broadway with the iconic Bette Middler leading the cast. In 2020, the production is transferring to the West End at the Adelphi Theatre. Featuring classic songs Penny in My Pocket, It Takes a Woman and more, Hello, Dolly! is heartfelt, timeless and, most importantly, loads of fun.
About the Show
Hello, Dolly! is the story of a socialite turned matchmaker. Based on Thornton Wilder's 1954 play The Matchmaker, the 2020 West End revival of Hello, Dolly! stars Olivier and BAFTA-winning actress Imelda Staunton. The legendary performer is known for her celebrated roles in musicals like Into the Woods, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, and Follies. The production is directed by Dominic Cooke, who reunites with Staunton after the Olivier Award-winning production of Follies. Cooke is no stranger to the stage having previously directed The Comedy of Errors, Clybourne Park, Jerusalem, and more. Hello, Dolly! features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. The musical’s sets and costumes have been designed by Rae Smith and the dance numbers have been choreographed by Bill Deamer.
The Story
Hello, Dolly! is the story of one Dolly Gallagher Levi. A socialite turned matchmaker, Dolly journeys to Yonkers to find the perfect match for the miserly, semi-millionaire Horace Vandergelder. What appears to be a simple task, turns into Dolly's most difficult job yet, particularly when personal feelings get involved. Her problems all begin when Dolly herself becomes a match for Horace, throwing her in a moral and professional dilemma. The story follows Dolly trying to move on from her ex-husband, get his blessings to marry Horace, and figure out if Horace himself is interested in her! A laugh-out-loud comedy with plenty of heartfelt emotions at play, Hello, Dolly! is arguably one of the best musicals of all time.
