Feminism and feminity tussle for attention in Laura Wade’s latest ‘Home, I’m Darling’ that enjoyed a sold-out run in 2018. Can a woman choose to leave a thriving career to stay at home? What is the gold standard for an ideal home life? Can you recreate an alternate reality in the connected reality of today? All these questions are answered along with the subtle commentary on the gender politics of the current era juxtaposed with a rose-tinted view of the 1950s. The delightful sets by Anna Fleischle and the emotive performance by Katherine Parkinson make ‘Home, I’m Darling’ a must-see play in 2019.
About the Show
"Home, I’m Darling" is the latest play by Laura Wade who wrote one of the best plays of the last decade ‘Posh’. The play is directed by Tamara Harvey and the cast is led by Katherine Parkinson, supported by Sara Gregory, Richard Harrington, Barnaby Kay, and Sian Thomas. The play recreates the 1950s in sets by Anna Fleischle, replete with bright color wallpaper and authentic furniture. Tom Gibbons provides an apt 1950s soundtrack that allows for the time transition seamlessly.
The Story
Judy and Johnny are the epitome of domestic bliss; the not-so-young couple is living the idyllic 1950’s home life in a bright and squeaky clean home. Judy is the archetypal homemaker, who spends her time cleaning and baking, waiting for her husband to return home. But, everything is not as it seems, because Judy brings out a laptop! The mirage of a pretty 1950s home starts to dissolve as it turns out Judy and Johnny are pretty much living in 2018.
The play explores the life of Judy and her transition from a well-paid financial executive to a well-coiffed 1950s housewife. It turns out the 1950s are an obsession and a desire to remedy issues from a past imagined for Judy. She takes along Johnny for a ride on her ‘chosen’ path, who is conflicted between his wife’s passion and the reality of living in 2018. Her friends Fran and Marcus, and her mother, offer a contrast to her life and reality. Watch ‘Home, I’m Darling’ to find out if Judy breaks from her reverie.
