The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) started in 1952 in Olinda, Victoria, born from the passion of film enthusiasts. Initially intended for a small audience, the first festival saw about 800 attendees, far exceeding expectations.
MIFF has since become Australia’s premier film festival and one of the oldest in the industry, held annually in Melbourne. Known for showcasing films that are not typically seen in local cinemas, it has grown to feature around 400 films and shorts from around the world.
Running for 17 days, MIFF attracts approximately 200,000 visitors, including film fans and industry professionals. The festival also hosts the 37°South Market, a four-day conference for networking and industry workshops.
MIFF offers various awards, including the Grand Prix for Best Short Film, the Award for Best Australian Short Film, and audience choice awards for feature films and documentaries. It continues to be a significant event for discovering innovative and global cinema.

Opening Night Gala
MIFF 2024 kicks off on Thursday, 8 August, with the Australian premiere of Adam Elliot’s "Memoir of a Snail" at Hoyts Melbourne Central. Join the celebration, mingle with stars on the red carpet, enjoy the film, and then head to the State Library Victoria for an unforgettable afterparty.
A first glance at some of the films
The MIFF 2024 First Glance line-up is here! Over 250 films from Australia and around the world will light up the screens at MIFF. Highlights include the hybrid live-action animation "Magic Beach," the documentary "Ellis Park" about musician Warren Ellis, Hear My Eyes' sonic reinterpretation of the classic "Wake in Fright," and the powerful premiere of "Left Write Hook." MIFF Schools
MIFF Schools returns for its 72nd edition in 2024, offering high-quality, diverse films in languages commonly taught in Victorian schools: French, Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish, and German. The program aligns with the Victorian Curriculum. In-cinema tickets cost $14 per student, and teachers attend for free. Screenings will be held from 8–25 August, complemented by free Professional Learning webinars by MIFF’s film-analysis expert, Dr. Josh Nelson.
Tickets to MIFF
MIFF offers a Multipass-12 for $259.50 (or $211.50 for concession holders), which includes 12 standard festival admissions that can be shared with friends. The Multipass-6 is available for $146 (or $119 for concession holders). Singlesession tickets are also available. Presale for MIFF members starts on Thursday, July 11, and sales for the general public begin at 9am on Tuesday, July 16. This year, some sessions will have allocated seating.
