History Of Quinta da Regaleira

In 1892, Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro acquired the Quinta da Regaleira estate and hired Italian architect Luigi Manini to transform it. Manini used a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles to create fountains, grottos, towers, wells, and other features that inspire contemplation and mystery.

The palace is adorned with symbols from alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar, and Rosicrucianism. The grounds feature secret pathways and two initiatory wells for ascending and descending, offering remarkable attractions throughout.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, Quinta da Regaleira is known for its eclectic styles and symbolic mysteries. Visitors can explore underground tunnels, enjoy views from towers and wells, and visit the library within the palace.
