Slave Play, an award-winning play by Jeremy O. Harris, recently made its mark on Broadway by opening at The Golden Theatre on October 6th, 2019. Critically acclaimed and considered one of O. Harris’ provocative works, the play earlier earned praises during its Off-broadway run last season. The story that is set in the 21st century America revolves around three couples who are navigating through the various complexities of race, history, gender as well as sexuality. Shown entwined in fear and desire, the story masterfully captures the essence of complicated relations and raw emotions.
The play held previews successfully in September, after opening for bookings in July and it features a cast including Joaquina Kalukango as Kaneisha, Ato Blankson-Wood as Gary, James Cusati-Moyer as Dustin, Sullivan Jones as Phillip, Chalia La Tour as Teá, Irene Sofia Lucio as Patricia, Annie McNamara as Alana, and Paul Alexander Nolan as Jim. Apart from a talented star cast, the play also features costume by four-time Drama Desk Award nominee Dede Ayite, lighting by Drama Desk Award nominee Jiyoun Chang, music by three-time Drama Desk Award nominee Lindsay Jones and scenic design by Tony Award winner Clint Ramos.
The two-hour-long play presents a unique amalgamation where the old South meets erotica. Set on the MacGregor Plantation, the play manages to teleport you from one place to another in a matter of seconds. Described as a mix of satire and psychodrama by the New York Times and referred to as the most promising playwright of his generation, the two-time NAACP and Obie Award winner Robert O’Hara makes sure that while nothing is as it seems, everything still is exactly as it looks like. Watch Slave Play discover the nexus of race, gender, and sexuality in a different light.
