Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman, which just finished a run at Gielgud Theatre West End, is finally making its long awaited Broadway debut. The engaging and decidedly political play is being helmed by Academy and Tony Award winner, Sam Mendes, who also happens to be the director of the Royal Court production. The West End production of The Ferryman has been the recipient of three Olivier Awards, including Best New Play and Best Director.
The thrilling and heartfelt drama is set in Northern Ireland in the early '80s during the Carney farmhouse's annual harvest celebration and feast, and follows the arrival of an unexpected visitor due to which the festivities are halted.
The production is scheduled to begin previews from October 2 for an October 21 opening night at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Given that the West End production was critically acclaimed, you can bet that the Broadway production will be equally, if not more, riveting!
The Ferryman Story
The Ferryman is set during The Troubles and tells the riveting and poignant story of the family of a former IRA activist, who live in a farmhouse in rural County Armagh. The drama is set in Northern Ireland in 1981. When the play opens, the Carney farmhouse is involved in a flurry of activities with preparations for the annual harvest going on in full swing. What is usually a day of hard work on the land and a traditional night of feasting and celebrations turns into something entirely else. And it all begins with the arrival of an unexpected visitor.
