Based on Academy Award winner Kenneth Lonergan’s famed memory play, The Waverly Gallery will make its much-anticipated Broadway debut at the John Golden Theatre in September 2018. The show is adapted from the powerhouse play that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2001 and has put together a group of theatre and film thespians to bring this piece of art to life. Before its Broadway debut, The Waverly Gallery premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in August 1999. Post this, the production opened Off-Broadway at the Promenade Theater in March 2000. The Broadway production is set to begin previews from September 25th and officially open on October 25th for a limited 18 week engagement.
Bringing together a fine mix of humor and drama, The Waverly Gallery beautifully showcases the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease on human life, making it a must-watch from the get go. With a award-winning team at the helm, you can expect this Broadway production to touch at your heartstrings and remind you of the love and support only family can give.
The Story of The Waverly Gallery
The Waverly Gallery is the power, emotional, and equally hilarious story of the final years of a kind, talkative, and sassy grandmother’s battle against Alzheimer’s disease. The show centers around Gladys, an old-school social activist who runs a small art gallery in Greenwich Village. When she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Gladys must come to terms with retaining her independence and dealing with the subsequent effect of her memory loss on her family, especially her grandson. The Waverly Gallery captures the strength of a family in the face of crisis in a hauntingly beautiful manner.
