Three Tall Women is a story that takes place across time. With gripping characters, and a hard-hitting story, the play's honest impact and creative writing won Edward Albee, the writer, a Pulitzer in Drama for his outstanding narrative. At its very essence, the play provides a snapshot of the life of a woman, and her life with its ups and downs. Life is observed in retrospect and that is captured very hauntingly in Albee’s narration of a woman who started off with optimism, but ended becoming embittered, lonely and harsh. The play is an accurate summary and portrayal of our lives and burdens of expectations and the consequences it has.
Making its Broadway debut on March 19, 2018, Three Tall Women is helmed by two time Tony award winner Joe Mantello, and starts a highly talented cast - Alison Pill, Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf.
The Story
Three Tall Women is a story of one woman, shown in three phases of her life. The play accurately captures the cherubic optimism of youth mingled with anticipation, which then slowly crumbles as life goes on. The play tackles the optimism of youth, the dismay of being the mother of a gay son and the harsh loneliness of old age.
Performance
The play premiered in Austria in 1991 and opened Off Broadway in 1994. The Off-Broadway production won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play, and the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.
It also ran at West End in October 1994, where it won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and Best Actress (Dame Maggie Smith).
The play will make its Broadway debut on March 19, 2018, and open for audiences on March 29, 2018.
