It’s June. The rainbows are out, and the Pride flag flies high. And as we celebrate and acknowledge the progress we've made, it is equally important to recognize that the fight for equality continues. After all, even in today's world, some folks are living in greyscale. However, amidst these challenges, we find inspiration in the cities that have taken a stand, creating safe spaces and fostering a sense of belonging for the LGBTQIA+ community. From the bustling Berlin to the warm Sydney, here is my pick of cities that embrace diversity, reminding us that inclusivity is worth fighting for. Head out and see the world in all its colour!

1. Amsterdam


Located in the western part of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is renowned as an LGBTQIA+-friendly city, having been among the first to legalize same-sex marriage. Strolling along its charming canals and gazing at the historic architecture, you'll feel the pulse of a city that celebrates diversity, art, and progressive ideals. The Netherlands boasts a rich history of LGBTQIA+ rights, and Amsterdam amplifies this legacy with its vibrant and visible queer community.

Germany’s metropolis is celebrated for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and pivotal role in shaping European politics, particularly in the 20th century, and as different as it may have been earlier, today it has a reputation for being open-minded and inclusive, and it has a vibrant LGBTQIA+ community with a rich history of activism and acceptance.

Reykjavik might be a small city tucked away in Iceland, but it has a progressive and inclusive atmosphere, hosting an annual LGBTQ+ pride parade and offers a welcoming environment for queer individuals. In addition to the stunning natural landscapes, geothermal wonders, and being a vibrant hub for local art, music, and literature, Iceland has been at the forefront of LGBTQIA+ rights. It was one of the first countries to legalize same-sex marriage in 2010, and Reykjavik, as the capital city, with a small yet vibrant LGBTQIA+ community, continues to strengthen this culture of acceptance and equality.

7. Puerto Vallarta


Puerto Vallarta is Mexico's best, accessible and welcoming gay beach destination that's also affordable. Unlike some Mexican cities that focus solely on luxury resorts, Puerto Vallarta offers something for everyone. Same-sex marriage has been legal in the state of Jalisco since 2016, and Puerto Vallarta has been a popular queer destination since the 1960s, when Elizabeth Taylor moved there and attracted gay travelers.

Zona Romantica is the city's official gayborhood, packed with dance clubs, over 20 gay-friendly bars, saunas, gay boat tours, cabarets, a gay beach, a gay bar hopping tour, and a thriving arts and culture scene.

The self-guided Puerto Vallarta Art Walk is a testament to this lively art scene. This year, the Art Walk will be held every Wednesday from 6 to 10 pm, starting on October 25th, 2023, and running until June 26th, 2024.

8. San Francisco


San Francisco is renowned for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, with over 15% of its population identifying as gay. The city, often called the gay capital of America, is rich in LGBTQ+ history, activism, and culture. The Castro neighborhood is the heart of this community, featuring a variety of bars, restaurants, and the iconic Castro Theatre, known for its gay cinema and sing-along musical nights. Visitors can also explore Harvey Milk's former camera store, now a Human Rights Campaign store, among many other gay-themed activities year-round. San Francisco's unique charm is further highlighted by its quirky statistic of having more dogs than children.

In the last 20 years, London's gay community has proudly moved from hidden spaces to the mainstream, making the city a top destination for gay and lesbian travelers. When in London, be sure to visit Old Compton Street, the main strip in Soho. Known for its vibrant and uninhibited atmosphere, it's a popular spot for cruising and nightlife. Soho has become London's premier gay neighborhood, replacing Earls Court, and now competes with Vauxhall, known for its dynamic gay village.

London, with its rich history and international significance, remains a commercial and cultural hub. While Soho was once the heart of queer partying, it has evolved into a more balanced alternative to areas like Vauxhall. The closing of the Soho Revue Bar marks the end of an era, but Soho remains a beloved destination for the LGBTQ+ community.

This carnival-like event, listed in the Guinness World Records, showcases Brazil's love for festivals and raises awareness of LGBTQ+ issues.
