Waitress on Broadway commenced its current run in 2016 and has announced that the final show will be played at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on January 5, 2020.

Recently, Diane Paulus’ Waitress added Todrick Hall and Colleen Ballinger to the cast and the response from the Broadway audience has been overwhelming. Singer-songwriter Todrick Hall was cast in the role of Ogie while YouTuber Colleen Ballinger plays Dawn in Waitress. This change in personnel has raked in some serious numbers for the show. In the week ending on September 1, 2019, Waitress on Broadway grossed at $963,408, which comes to about 94.5% of its actual potential. This places the show at the eighth spot above the likes of Frozen, Mean Girls, and The Lion King.

The show played at 100.91% capacity during this week. It is possible that the long weekend ending with Labor Day played some part in it, but the numbers are still expected to go up for Waitress in the following week. Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles has played a big part in coming up with the adored music of the show. Waitress on Broadway has been adapted from the 2007 film of the same name starring Kerri Russell and Nathan Fillion. After its first run at the Broadway, it was produced for London’s West End. It is based on the book by Jessie Nelson. Waitress tackles the theme of women’s liberation in a lighthearted manner.

Waitress on Broadway

The eponymous waitress in the show is Jenna. She is an expert pie-maker. However, her life weighs her down with an unhappy marriage and a job that is limiting her from realizing the true potential. At this crucial juncture of her life, she finds out that she is pregnant. As she is on the verge of resigning to her fate, she finds out about a baking contest in the city. This contest strikes her as an opportunity to get back up. Waitress leaves the audience with something to smile about whenever they are reminded of it. This is possibly the reason why it is still making headlines 3 years after its current run began.
