A brand-new musical has arrived on Broadway. Set amidst racial harmony and internal conflict in 1863, Paradise Square shows us the promise of what America could be.
Why Watch Paradise Square
Why Watch Paradise Square
Helmed by a wonderful cast and creative team, including award-winning director Moises Kaufman and choreographer Bill T. Jones - Paradise Square depicts an American society that's too good to be true but what could possibly be in everyone's hearts.
As the Civil War rages on in 1863, a group of free Blacks and Irish immigrants try to make it through the violence as an unlikely community. Racial harmony is strong and tap dancing in the local saloon in the Five Point Slums plays a strong role in cementing this solidarity. But bigger forces are at play. As the audience watches how the different characters navigate through the strife - a Black woman, her Irish-Catholic sister-in-law and her Black minister husband, a newly arrived Irish immigrant, a freedom seeker, an anti-abolitionist political boss; and a penniless songwriter - it becomes more certain that conflicting notions of what American society should be like are more real than hope for an ideal society.
This musical runs till 27 Nov 2022 at the Barrymore Theatre, NYC.
