Stravinsky & Balanchine

Stravinsky & Balanchine performance at New York's Lincoln Center stage.

Witness a confluence of dance and music as Igor Stravinksy and George Balanchine’s memorable collaborations are brought back to life on the New York Stage. Considered to be amongst the top collaborations of the 20th century, get an unforgettable experience of four masterpieces created by the duo!

  • Igor Stravinsky is considered to be one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. He was renowned for his technical innovations in rhythm and harmony, and for his ability to adapt with the times. He has created works in three style periods of music, the Russian period, the neoclassical period, and the serial period, making him one of the most versatile composers of all time.

George Balanchine is another renowned artist of the 20th century, whose influence on ballet in the United States has earned him the title of “Father of American Ballet.” He was well-known for his unique ballet variations and the signature neoclassical style of ballet that spread across the country. The duo went on to create over 30 works together over a period of 50 years. Balanchine said that Stravinksy’s music begged to be placed into physical motion and dance. Both artists had the same notion of beauty and grace and were able to easily create works that flowed flawlessly from one movement to the next. *Monumentum Pro Gesualdo *and Movements for Piano and Orchestra are typically paired together, and they serve as the perfect example of bringing together the classical and more modern versions of Balanchine’s ballet together, along with music to match.

    The Show

The first ballet is known as Danses Concertantes. It features a series of pas de trois (a dance between three people) that is equal parts invigorating and fanciful. It is a prime example of Balanchine’s genius and his ability to make it work with the background score.

The second ballet is called Monumentum pro-Gesualdo. The dancers are decked in leotards, and the refined and streamlined performance is guaranteed to leave you spellbound. The sheer beauty and simplicity of the choreography is wonderful to witness in person.

The third ballet, named Movements for Piano and Orchestra, is filled with dissonance and electric currents. The movements are precise and sharp, and you will feel the currents sweep through with the power of the movements.

The final ballet is known as the Stravinksy Violin Concerto. Considered to be a masterpiece of ballet, symmetry forms the fain theme of the performance. Two duets, considered to be some of the finest work of Balanchine is all set to astound the audiences at the finale!
