The Organ Of The Duomo

The organ of the Duomo has a whopping 15,800 pipes with the highest over 9 meters and the smallest, just a few centimeters. The organ was built by Mascioni of Cuvio and Tamburini of Crema in 1938 and restored and relocated in 1986. The organ is the largest in Italy and the second largest in Europe.

The Madonnina

The Madonnina is located on the highest spire of the Duomo and represents the soul of Milan. The statue was commissioned in 1762 by Francesco Croce- the architect of Veneranda Fabrica (the organization responsible for building the cathedral). During the 2nd World war, the statue was covered in gray-green cloth to prevent it from becoming an easy target for enemy bombers.

Statue of St. Bartholomew

The statue of St. Bartholomew is known for its remarkable anatomical details. St. Bartholomew was one of the apostles of Jesus, sent out to preach the word of Jesus. The statute was made in 1562 by Marco d’Agrate- a Lombard sculptor. The statue is known for its explicit details of the bones, nerves and tense muscle fibers.

The Doors of Milan Duomo

According to the records, the construction of the doors of Duomo began in 1582. The tympanum of the central door has relief depicting the creation of eve. The entire sculpture is made from Carrara marble. The side doors are in honor of the heroines from the Bible. The main door itself was finished in 1906, made with neo-Gothic measurements.

Duomo Milan’s Rooftop

If you go to the rooftops of the cathedral, you’ll be able to appreciate the marble profile of the structure that you’d otherwise miss.Duomo being the only Gothic cathedral with accessible terraces allows you to explore the intricate details of the exterior. The terraces also give a good view of the city of Milan.

The Central Nave of Milan Duomo

The sheer size of the nave with gigantic vertical pillars can amuse you. The central nave is 149 feet high and 63 feet wide. The pillars here are 8 feet in diameter and are up to 78 feet high. The pillars are decorated with intricately carved capitals and statues. The floor of the nave is entirely marble.
