Underneath the Louvre's courtyard lies the remains of a medieval fortress, the original structure from the 12th century on which the museum was built.
In 1803, the Louvre was renamed to Musée Napoléon, after Napoleon Bonaparte. The name remained till 1815 when Napoleon abdicated.
3,690 paintings, sculptures, and other valuable works were relocated from the Louvre in 1939 before the Nazis invaded during World War II.
The Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911 by Italian handyman Vincenzo Peruggia, making international headlines. By the time she was recovered, she had become the most famous painting in the world.
