Explore Heritage & Culture at Shirakawa-go
Before making your way to the magnificent Shirakawa-go, stop at the Tenshukaku Observatory to admire the gorgeous view of valleys, stretches of green forests, and rice fields. Soak in the scenes and click beautiful pictures before hopping back onboard to reach Shirakawa-go.
Shirakawa-go was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for the traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are over 250 years old.
Gassho-zukuri means "built like praying hands" since the steep thatched farmhouse roofs mimic Buddhist monks' hands squeezed together in prayer. The architectural style evolved over generations and helped endure the region's heavy snowfall throughout the winter. Also called "Hida's little Kyoto," it is designated as a conserved area with significant traditional structures from the Edo era.
