Why Visit Matera
Why Visit Matera
An often overlooked remote part of Southern Italy, Matera is one of Italy's most unique destinations. The town is shaped by two large stones, Barisano and Caveoso. Caves were dug into them, becoming homes, hotels, restaurants, shops, cafes, art galleries, and museums. Besides Civita, the city has its own third part, where the stone dwellings were located outside the city walls. The city is known as the oldest settlement of Italy and sometimes also referred to as the oldest city in the world.
What to Expect on Your Electric Vespa Ride
The e-Vespa is the perfect way to discover the winding lanes of Matera and Murgia Materana. Discover the beautiful surroundings while accompanied by a tour guide who will take you to the best spots for a closer look and tell you the stories behind them.
A must-stop will be at the Grotta del Brigante. Here, you will get a wonderful view of the city from within a natural cave part of the Gravina Canyon, from which the city itself is built. After stopping at the important Sanctuary, you will see frescoes adorning the walls and a favorite pilgrimage site. On the panoramic road of the Sassi (Barisano and Caveoso), you will also observe the oil mills and water cisterns once used as water sources in the 007 series' film No Time to Die.
