It was great that everything was included. However, the "audio guide" was the app! No one told us that until we got there, so we were not able to do that part as wi-fi & cell signal was weak so we couldn't download it. So if you go, download the app & bring headsets!!! Other than than it was an amazing day trip that was totally worth it. We were warned because of the weather to go another day but it was our last day so we braved the rain, which eventually stopped & we had a little bit of sunshine! :).

There is so much more to do at Montserat than I thought. We were there from 9-5, and still could have stayed longer. Exchanging the vouchers for tickets was quite painless. We wanted to leave Barcelona early, so had to get the train ticket the day before, as the office only opens at 8am. We enjoyed the freedom of having an audio guide rather than traipsing after someone.

Board a train and set out on a round-trip journey from Barcelona to explore Montserrat, where a crown of serrated mountains stands tall to awe you. Visit the Information Office to get your hands on the multi-lingual audio guide and informative booklet, along with a map to locate and deep dive into key highlights.

Revered religious sites

The centuries-old Basilica of Montserrat is a revered pilgrim site, as the Throne of the Virgin of Montserrat, the Black Madonna, resides here. Get swift access to this world-famous Romanesque sculpture with timed entry and roam the rest of the basilica at your own pace. Stand in awe of the golden arches and ornaments adorning the walls of the Basilica. Upgrade your ticket to attend the prayer ceremony and liturgical celebrations with the boys’ choir of Escolanía de Montserrat, one of Europe’s oldest music schools.

Museums to explore

A historically rich and artistically significant site, the Open-Air Museum in Montserrat is a sanctuary comprising of multiple religious sites. Located here is the Holy Grotto, also called Santa Cova, where, according to legends, the sculpture of the Virgin of Montserrat was hidden to protect it from Moorish invaders. Catch a glimpse of the exhibition of Audiovisual Space Montserrat Portes Endins, which tells the story of the monastery, sanctuary, and the serrated mountains. To explore the artistic culture of the region, head over to the Museum of Montserrat, which was crowned a museum of national interest in 2006. Works by artists such as Monet, Dali, and Picasso grace the walls of the museum, with important archaeological collections from Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt displayed proudly in the museum.
