Why Watch Early Spring
Why Watch Early Spring
A dance drama that is performed by the Shanghai Opera House Dance Ensemble, Early Spring is inspired from the well-known book by Rou Shi, February. It is directed by Wang Yuanyuan, one of the leading choreographers of China whose work has been staged in numerous countries across the world. She has won several “Best Choreographer” Awards at the various International Ballet Competitions held in the US, Moscow, Bulgaria, and Shanghai. The Dance Ensemble has been a force to be reckoned in the sphere of traditional Chinese dance. Their unique style combines both technically and physically complex routines while continuing to maintain its traditional roots. The production had a sell-out run in 2018 and was critically acclaimed for its excellent music, choreography, and direction.
The Story
The story is set in 1920s rural China. People living in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces are rife with traditional value and beliefs. A young intellectual, Xiao Jianqui, struggles to accept these values and is a misfit. One day, his kindness towards a widow in the village is misinterpreted by the villagers. Gossip and jibes follow, and Xiao is forced to make a major decision. Witness how twisted and cruel society is, and the lengths to which people will go to get away from such a toxic environment. Will Xiao continue to be indifferent to society, or will succumb to it?
