What to Expect on Your Visit to the Valley of Temples
Agrigento is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Valley of the Temples – a muse to many poets, philosophers, and artists. Skip the lines and explore its unique structures with your bilingual guide from columns and agoras to graves and beyond.
From Juno to Jesus: A Historic Route
The Temple of Hera, also called the Temple of Juno, is what you first see entering the park. Dating back to the 6th century BC, it’s among the oldest here, with elaborate Doric columns and pediments.
The next stop is the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved examples of ancient Greek architecture still standing today. The olive tree standing before it is a great photo opportunity! Then, go over to the ruins of the Park's oldest temple, now merely pillars – the 6th-century Temple of Hercules.
Don’t miss the Temple of Castor and Pollux, dedicated to the Greek mythological twins, or the Temple of Vulcan constructed for Hephaestus, the god of fire.
The Temple of Demeter is located beneath the church of San Biagio. Once the largest, the remains of the Temple of Zeus invite you in next. The 8th temple, of Asclepius, sits further away, on the banks of the Akragora River.
The intriguing necropolis, where early Christians buried their dead, is last on this tour. At the Garden of Kolymbetra, once a water reservoir, unwind and admire the valley amidst trees like pomegranate, citrus, and fig.
