Aboard a comfortable air-conditioned bus from Madrid and set off towards the Royal Monastery of El Escorial. Built in the 16th century, the fortress-palace is an impressive sight, with a fascinating history to match. King Felipe II had commissioned the building of the palace in 1563 after Spain’s victory over France at St. Quentin. It took over 21 years to build the monastery and reflects both the king’s reserved nature as well as his religious devotion.
Once considered the 8th wonder of the world, the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial has walls lined with beautiful tapestries and colorful frescoes that depict scenes from classical history. Explore the beautiful barrel-vaulted library here, and see the collection of over 40,000 books that cover everything from philosophy to theology and politics. Visit the Royal Pantheon, a quiet, domed space that served as the final resting place of many Spanish monarchs and far too many of their infant children. At the end of the guided tour, you will have some time to explore the gardens and the surrounding areas, before catching the bus back to Madrid
