Did you know ‘wat’ means ‘temple’ in Thai? On this guided walking tour of two of Bangkok’s most significant temple attractions, experience the serene Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).

Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)

Wat Pho is the largest and oldest Buddhist temple complex in Bangkok and home to Thailand's largest Buddha. The temple was built during the reign of Rama I in the Ayutthaya architectural style. With 16 entrances, gold statues of various Buddhas, marble interiors, and noteworthy artwork from the early Bangkok period – Wat Pho is truly an impressive religious structure. The biggest highlight is, of course, the ‘Reclining Buddha of Wat Pho’. It’s 46-meters in length and 15-meters in height from the base to the topknot. The feet – inlaid with auspicious mother-of-pearl – alone measure 5-meters in length and 3-meters in height.

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

A picturesque sight along the banks of the Chao Phraya river, this royal monastery has been named for Aruna, the God of Dawn, and dates back to the Ayutthaya period. It has an exquisite architectural style with a central prang (also ‘spire’) and the use of materials like glazed porcelain and benjarong multi-colored crockery. Carefully observe the exteriors as you enter this 300-year-old complex. Watch out for formidable mythical giant demons that guard the entrances and visit the Ordination Hall and the Bell Tower, and see many Buddha statues. Make sure to enjoy the vibrant nature of one of the city’s most favored temples.
