Thailand’s Most Famous Floating Market: Damnoen Saduak

The Damnoen Saduak is one of the most sought-after tourist attractions in Bangkok, amongst other popular market scenes. The floating market of Damnoen Saduak is even more intriguing than it sounds; it is, in fact, a market that stays afloat a maze of canals. Experiencing the floating market of Damnoen Saduak is a rare opportunity when in Thailand, a great way to engage with the locals and pick up on their culture and lifestyle.

You will take a long-tail boat and sail along the Damnoen Saduak canals. Notice the local houses lined along the canal and take a peek at their intriguing ways of living. When you arrive at the market, be mesmerized by the stunning array of merchants and local vendors selling their products on their boats. Indulge in tasting the local food, such as Pad Thai, Mango Sticky Rice, Boat Noodles, and Coconut Ice Cream. Don’t forget to take back home a souvenir of this vivacious floating market.

If your taste buds are tickling for some authentic Thai food, don’t worry, for an authentic Thai cuisine luncheon is part of your experience. This pitstop will be made between Damnoen Saduak floating market and the River Kwai.

Kanchanaburi: The Historic Town of Thailand

It is often tempting to embellish the history of Kanchanaburi’s part in World War II, but this town is most popularly known for its terrific trio: The Death Railway, the Allied War Cemetery, and the bridge over the River Kwai. Note that even though the scenic riverside town sets the stage for a relaxed stroll, it tends to get loud at night from discos and karaoke bars.

Delve into the history of Kanchanaburi by visiting World War II sites and memorials. Listen to your tour guide as they share stories about the POW camps, and get down at the Allied War Cemetery to pay your respects to the 6,000 prisoners. The JEATH War Museum will feed you stories of the harsh realities at war and notice the many mementos left behind.

The (Actual) Bridge on the River Kwai

If you have watched the 1957 movie, The Bridge on the River Kwai, there’s no surprise this part of the trip will enthuse you the most. Even though the movie was shot in Sri Lanka, this bridge really exists and is still carries regular local passenger trains from Bangkok. This meter-gauge railway line runs for 250 miles from Ban Pong, Thailand all the way to Thanbyuzayat, Burma. Needless to say, those interested in 20th-century history, a visit to Kanchanaburi is a must.
