When in Iceland, take the magnificent Golden Circle route through the countryside to witness stunning locations of natural wonder. The three sought-after stops on the Golden Circle route are Thingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal field, and the Gullfoss waterfall.
Thingvellir National Park
If you’ve ever wished to be in two places at once, then a visit to the Thingvellir National Park will thrill you. This beautiful park sits between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It was this very separation that created Iceland many years ago, and the reason it has such fascinating volcanic activity. Þingvellir is also the location where the world’s first parliament was formed.
Geysir Geothermal Area
Another iconic Icelandic attraction, the Geysir Hot Springs is home to the original erupting geyser. The first geyser to ever be advertised on print, this hotspot is the origin of the word geyser itself. Although the original geyser is no longer active, the new spectacle, Strokku spouts water 30 meters (100 ft) into the air every few minutes.
Gullfoss Waterfall
Gullfoss, a large waterfall fed by the Hvítá river, tumbles down a staggering 32 meters over three stages, leaving a thunderous roar in its wake. The unique mineral composition of the river bed causes a shimmering effect as the water surges.
