Travel back in time to the sixteenth century, when great Christian constructive projects started in Grenada under the aegis of King Charles V. The most monumental of these buildings is that of the Cathedral of Granada. Built atop the city’s former mosque, the cathedral’s construction work went on for almost two centuries. Despite being only half complete, its harmonious blends of architectural styles make it one of Spain’s greatest monuments.
Originally intended to look Gothic in appearance, the cathedral went through several changes over the decades. Architect Diego de Siloé added a Renaissance touch to it and Alonso Cano added a baroque facade to it. Don’t miss out on visiting the crypts of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II. Admire the stunning architecture of the Corinthian columns and the series of stained glass windows that will take you back to another time. You will also see the beautiful paintings on the retablo of the Chapel of Trinity by artists like El Greco, Jusepe de Ribera and Alonso Cano.
