Cagliari, which is situated on the southwestern coast of the Italian island of Sardinia, is home to a hill known as the Colle of Sant'Elia. The hiking trail begins at the bottom of the hill, close to the Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria, and weaves its way up the hillside through a thick forest of Mediterranean scrub, juniper trees, and pine trees. Hikers may pause to take in the breathtaking vistas of the city and the ocean along the route, as well as take a break at one of the numerous picnic sites.
The Spaniards erected a stronghold on top of the hill in the 18th century called the Forte di Sant'Elia in order to protect the city from raids by pirates. This structure is known as the Forte di Sant'Elia. The fort has been decommissioned for some time, but tourists are welcome to explore the remains and take in the beautiful views from atop the fort's walls. The hiking trail is well-marked and appropriate for hikers of all abilities, however, there are certain portions that may be difficult due to their high inclines.
