Known as the ‘German Florence’ before WWII, Dresden is the capital of the state of Saxony and is situated on the banks of the River Elbe. It’s famous for its art, culture, and buildings showcasing mixed Baroque and Renaissance architecture. On this expert-guided tour, soak up the charming heritage of this city and enjoy a cup of coffee at the end.
Go through the Neumarkt, a culturally and historically significant area of the modern city. This area was badly hit – almost wiped out – during WWII and had to be completely rebuilt. Learn about the Lutheran church ‘Frauenkirche’, also known as ‘Church of Our Lady’. Rich in Baroque stylistic details, this is one of the greatest symbols of Protestant sacred architecture around the world. It was originally destroyed during the Allied firebombing of the city. Continue onwards to the Semper Opera House and Zwinger. The opera house is one of the most beautiful in the world and houses the Saxon State Orchestra, one of the world's oldest and best-known orchestras. The Zwinger is the most famous and notable landmark in Dresden with its palace complex and gardens, and Museum Complex including the Porcelain Collection, Old Masters Picture Gallery, and more. You’ll see the Residenz Palace or ‘Dresden Castle’ opposite the Zwinger. This building was once the seat of the ultimate power of the Saxon kings.
Other attractions on this interesting tour include the Brühl Terrace, Fürstenzug, Stallhof, Catholic Court Church, Taschenberg Palace, and the major tourist attraction – the Augustus Bridge.
