The Medronho & Honey Distillery
After a quick introduction with your guide, hop into the jeep and start your 7-hour trip. The first stop is a small local distillery, where you taste the local drink, medronho. It is a potent alcoholic beverage made from the fruit of the arbutus tree.
Sample some of this traditional fire water before continuing to see how honey gets made. The Apis mellifera iberiensis or Spanish bee produces this translucent golden yellow honey, rich in mineral salts. You’re encouraged to channel Winnie-the-Pooh as you take a taste.
Enjoy Lunch at Monchique
Next, head to Monchique in the Serra de Monchique mountains, a picturesque village settled by the Moors in the 8th century. Bask in its stunning views and walk by its charming architecture. In the hills right nearby lies the ancient Moorish castle Silves. Relish the delicious cuisine with a sumptuous lunch in a local restaurant.
After lunch, climb to the highest point in Algarve: Foia Mountain, at an altitude of 900-meters. Take in panoramic views of the Western Algarve and the Costa Vicentina, all against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.
Cool off in Alte’s Waterfall
On the way down towards the Algarve, stop at Alte, another white-washed village known for its natural beauty and traditional charm. Here, you have the opportunity to cool off in a beautiful waterfall. A perfect end to a day of adventure and discovery.
