Walk Down The Lanes of Seville With a Knowledgeable Guide
Start your tour from the Torre del Oro or the Tower of Gold situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir river. The 13th-century military watchtower was named so that the structure’s twelve sides were once covered in golden tiles. These closed walls hold centuries' worth of history, which you will learn about from your guide. After walking a little further, you will encounter the Torre de la Plata or the Tower of Silver. Another imposing structure from the Arab era, much like the Torre del Oro, the octagonal military tower is painted entirely in white. The next stop will take you to the Ancient Mint. The somewhat unassuming building is where gold and silver coins were minted in the 1500 and 1600s.
After which, you can proceed to the Archive of Indies located in the Casa Lonja de Mercaderes building. The architectural marvel was built by Juan de Herrera in 1785 on the orders of King Charles III and stands out for its exemplary beauty. But what is inside the archive is far more extraordinary. It contains an incomparable wealth of knowledge in the form of bookshelves that stretch for an astonishing 10 kilometers and houses 43,000 documents highlighting the colonial history of the New World starting from the 16th century until the 19th century.
Next, you will be on your way to the royal palace of Alcázar, which is one of the major highlights of the city. Built for the Christian king Peter of Castile, it has the perfect blend of Christian and Moorish cultural influences and is also a shining example of Mudéjar art. Your guide will fill you in on the palace’s comprehensive history dating back to the 10th century. What’s more? The stately palace was also recently featured in the fantasy series, Game of Thrones.
End Your Tour At The Cathedral and Barrio de Santa Cruz
The last destination on this tour is the neighborhood of Santa Cruz. Known for being the tourist center of Seville, it is lined with trendy restaurants, hotels, palaces, and an impressive collection of historic monuments. You can spend a great deal of time strolling through the winding streets before ending up at the Seville Cathedral or the Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, the last stop on this tour. A marvelous example of Gothic architecture, it is also the burial site of the legendary explorer Christopher Columbus.
