Ever heard of the ‘City of Water?’ Wondering whether it is real and where it exists? Well, it is very much real and lies just beneath the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome. Not kidding! In this one-hour guided tour, explore the lesser-known archeological sites Vicus Caprarius, also known as the City of Water. The archeological site dates back to the former empire, 9 meters below the city surface where you will encounter, evidence of great events that represent the history of the city of Rome, with the help of your professional guide.
Start by making a wish on the largest Baroque fountain in the city, the Trevi Fountain, before venturing into the Trevi District that lies beneath. Be sure what you wish for! Escape the crowds soon after and make your way 9 meters below the city surface, to discover the recently excavated site (1999-2001) of Vicus Caprarius. You’ll learn how Modern Rome was built on the back of its empire and how literal that is as you proceed below. History comes to life as you come across a Roman villa, an ancient cistern, and exhibits of unearthed artifacts. You will come across interesting findings from the excavation such as the famous head of Alessandro Helios, a treasure trove of 800 coins, and polychrome marble coverings. Observe the archaeological evidence ranging from Aqua Virgo to the fire of Nero and be mesmerized by this unforeseen treasure. Interesting fact: the water that flows from the Trevi Fountain, continues to supply water to the pools and pipes of the Domus residence.
