Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
Iceland is sometime called “The Land of Ice and Fire.” Situated on the meeting point of two tectonic plates, earthquakes and volcanic activity is a common occurrence. Owing to its geographical location in the Arctic, temperatures are quite low, and a number of glaciers and ice-tipped mountains exist. Approximately 11% of Iceland is covered in glaciers. As a result, it is the perfect location for glacier hiking. Ice climbing is also another popular activity in this region. The Svínafellsjökull glacier, part of the massive Vatnajökull glacier has been used as scenery for a number of movies. James Bond, Interstellar and the TV show Game of Thrones have been shot in these regions.
Your Experience
Your Experience
As you arrive at the Skaftafell Visitor Center, you will meet the friendly and experienced hiking guide. A short briefing on the safety procedures will be given to you, along with the equipment. With an experienced guide along with you, a safe and fun adventure is guaranteed! You will then take a bus to Skaftafell, where you will be given a demonstration on the usage of the gear provided. Once your group members are all set and ready, your hike will begin. There are two variants.
The first one is a trek along the glacier. The incredible ice formations and surroundings are sure to leave you amazed. Your journey will be filled with sights of ice sculptures, abyssal glacier mills and deep cracks. As you keep moving higher, spectacular views of the Skaftafell National Park are possible. Since the hike is quite demanding, you will also learn about more advanced climbing techniques.
The second tour will involve ice climbing activities with a glacier hike. Since the glacier is continuously changing, your guide will examine the area to find a new Moulin to climb. They will fix an enormous screw into the ice and attach a rope. You can use this to climb up the icy walls, and at specific points, can even rappel into fissures. Your informative guide will explain the science behind glacier formation and the effects that global warming and greenhouse gases have had on them. As you conquer one glacier hill after another, your dexterity in moving will improve drastically as compared to the beginning.
When the tour ends, your exhaustion will be punctuated by the feeling of triumph and joy. As you walk back to the Information Center, you will be far more knowledgeable about glaciers and glacier hiking. It is undoubtedly the perfect ice experience.
