What’s in store underneath?
There are 4 main tombs in the Hypogeum, each unveiling breathtaking ancient craftsmanship. Carved side by side into the rock, the hypogea share structural patterns but contain distinct characteristics.
Among the tombs, Hypogeum A, once adorned with 8 bas-reliefs, bears the marks of time and quarrying activities. Only 1 bas-relief remains intact. In contrast, Hypogeum B unveils a time capsule treasure trove of artifacts — urns, altars, frescoes, and amphorae.
Rooms that remember
The enchanting Hypogeum C, remarkably preserved, showcases splendid decorations and bas-reliefs of unparalleled beauty. Explore the lower sepulchral chamber's ornate adornments, featuring garlands, intricate reliefs, and a Medusa head. Frescoes depict symbolic scenes, including Dionysus and Ariadne, adding mythical and meta narrative insight.
Hypogeum D, which underwent significant Roman modifications, boasts numerous burial niches from the Latin era. Inside, Roman-era artifacts, treasures, and a Latin inscription offer a fascinating glimpse into the layers of history embedded in this extraordinary site.
