The glorious past of Naples
Marvel at the 4 entrances carved out of rock leading to 4 underground tombs each with an upper chamber for funeral rites and a lower one for putting the dead to rest under carved beds complete with mattresses and pillows. These elaborate constructs, the rich paint of 23,000-year-old Hellenic wall paintings, and the extravagant trompe l’oeil effects whisper tales of an affluent past, when Neopolis was the center of the ancient Greek empire.
Tour of Hypogeum
Ancient burial rites will come to life as you step into hypogeums full of urns, altars, and frescoes. The third hypogeum is the most evocative of the four. Its entrance will greet you with a hidden painting of sacred nuptials, an unusual practice for burial chambers hinting at bygone funerary Dionysian cults. In its lower chamber, a variety of garlands serenade bas-reliefs and a sculpture of Medusa’s head adorns a wall.
