An industrial town built in the late 19th century, Colònia Güell served as a home for the people who worked in the nearby mill. Several eminent modernist architects were commissioned to build this town and the strong modernist style influence is visible throughout Colònia Güell. Theatres, schools, gardens and an Athenaeum were erected here during the 19th century. Buildings were constructed primarily using bricks and stone and most of the buildings remain in their pristine condition due to the renovation efforts at Colònia Güell.
Ca l’Ordal is a traditional Spanish country house, resembling many such houses that served as homes to locals who worked at the mill. Designed by Francesc Berenguer and Joan Rubió, it represents the popular style of architecture during the 19th century and the brick structure gives a view into the life of people living in this era. Ca L’Espinal is considered one of the finest examples of modernist architecture. One of the highest quality buildings in Colonia Guell, this massive structure is an appealing sight.
In the early 20th century, Antoni Gaudí was one of the most sought-after architects in Spain. His innovations and designs were spectacular, and several monuments across the country had been commissioned to him. Eusebi Güell decided to appoint Gaudi to build a church in the town of Colònia Güell. The Güell family, however, withdrew funding, and as a result, the church was unfinished. Presently, it is called Gaudi’s crypt. Gaudi also had a laboratory here, where he came up with innovative architectural marvels. Most of his work for the Sagrada Familia was inspired at this location. The crypt itself is a spectacular sight, although it is not fully complete. The geometric patterns and vibrant colors of the stained glasswork make this one of the greatest unfinished works of art in the world. The monument blends wonderfully into nature and is a testament to the genius of Antoni Gaudí. Recently, an effort by the local architects resulted in a partial completion of the crypt. Presently, people can stand on the roof, which was initially to serve as the floor of the church.
