We wanted to start our traveling journey and chose Pisa because it is a comfortable little city and has a lot of great sightseeing places. The food was delicious expecially gelato near The Leaning tower. The historical museums were interesting and educational, beautiful sculptures. Our favourite was the tower, but not just taking photos Like you Are holding it, climbing was better. As the tower is leaning you lean as you climb. So, If you Are Starters at discovering Italy, Like us this is a place for you.

I really liked how easy it was to get there. I didn't like the amount of time allotted for lunch. Eating lasagna and tasting wines in just an hour was terrible. I suggest simply spacing things out better.

Things to know before booking your Day Trips from City A to City B

  • Total duration & timing: Pisa-only tours typically last 5–6 hours door-to-door; multi-stop days run 9–12 hours, so match departures (often 8:00–9:00 am) to stamina.
  • Transit & road conditions: Travel is usually by coach or regional train, taking around 1–1.5 hours, so consider traffic comfort versus a 25–30 minute walk.
  • Group size options: Large coach tours often carry around 30–50 guests, while minivan or guided city tours keep groups smaller; choose based on interaction preference.
  • Expert guided insight: Options range from transfer-only to guided Pisa walks, often in several languages; choose guided departures if commentary and local orientation matter.
  • Customizable add-ons: Tours may include Leaning Tower climb tickets, Lucca stops, or local pastry tastings; decide whether such extras justify longer days than transfer-only options.
  • Accessibility & mobility note: The Tower has 294 steps, no elevator, and under-8s cannot climb; with walks up to 30 minutes, consider ground-level visits.

How to get from Florence to the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Round-trip transfers from Florence are the easiest way to reach Pisa and the Leaning Tower. You meet at a central point near Santa Maria Novella, ride in an air-conditioned coach or minivan, and are dropped within a short walk of Piazza dei Miracoli. Many tours bundle a guide, timed Tower tickets, and cathedral access, so you don’t have to juggle train times or reservations. This is generally the recommended choice if you want a smooth, low-stress day with a guaranteed ride back.

Helpful Tips for a Florence to Pisa Day Trip

  • Know where your Florence coach leaves from: Most Pisa tours depart Piazzale Montelungo behind Santa Maria Novella, so screenshot directions and arrive with extra time.
  • If you’re taking the train, pad your timing: Leave 90 minutes between arrival at Pisa Centrale and Tower entry to cover delays and station‑to‑square walk.
  • Choose shoes for the Tower, not just the bus: The marble staircase is narrow, sloping, and 294 steps, so flimsy sandals feel unsafe fast.
  • Check Tower rules before promising a climb to kids: Children under eight can’t go up, and everyone’s ticket and ID are checked strictly at entrance.
  • Pack one light cover‑up for Pisa’s churches: The Duomo and Baptistery expect shoulders and knees covered, so a thin scarf saves outfit headaches in summer.
  • Travel light around Piazza dei Miracoli: Backpacks must be left in cloakroom before the Tower, so keep valuables in pockets or a compact cross‑body.
  • Snack a few streets away from the lawns: For better‑priced panini and gelato than by the Tower, walk along Via Santa Maria toward Corso Italia.
  • Head to the south‑west side of the lawn for photos: This is where guides send groups to nail the classic “holding up the Tower” shot.
  • Match your tour choice to your Pisa priorities: Pisa‑and‑Lucca days give you about an hour at the Tower, so choose Pisa‑only options if climb matters.
  • Respect Pisa’s monuments like a local: Stay off roped‑off lawns, keep voices low inside the Duomo, and listen quietly during Baptistery echo demonstrations.

Frequently asked questions about day trips from Florence to Pisa

  • Most Pisa-only tours from Florence last about 5–6 hours door-to-door, including roughly 1–1.5 hours of travel each way and 2–3 hours in Pisa. Full-day Tuscany itineraries that combine Pisa with places like Lucca, Siena, or San Gimignano usually run 9–12 hours.

  • Standard tours include round-trip transport from central Florence, an escort or guide, and a guided orientation around Piazza dei Miracoli. Some add timed Leaning Tower climb tickets and cathedral/baptistery entry. Meals and hotel pickup are usually not included unless clearly stated as upgrades or private options.

  • Only tours that specifically say “Leaning Tower ticket/climb included” give you access to the staircase. Others may offer exterior views only or sell the climb as an optional extra. If going up the Tower is essential, always check that a timed climb slot is clearly mentioned before booking.

  • Most group tours use air‑conditioned coaches, driving directly from Florence to parking areas near Piazza dei Miracoli. Some small‑group options use regional trains plus a walk or short local bus ride. Private tours generally use a car or minivan with hotel pickup and flexible timing.

  • Coach tours typically leave from bus bays near Santa Maria Novella station, often Piazzale Montelungo just behind the station. Train-based tours meet inside or just outside the station. Exact meeting points and check‑in times are shared after booking, and it’s wise to arrive 15–20 minutes early.

  • Yes, advance booking is strongly recommended, especially from April to October. Tours and Leaning Tower climb slots can sell out days or weeks ahead, particularly mid‑morning and late‑afternoon times. Securing your place early also gives you more choice of tour style, language, and departure time.

  • Flexibility depends on the specific tour. Many allow free cancellation or date changes up to a set deadline (often 24–72 hours before departure), while some Leaning Tower tickets can be more restrictive. Always check the cancellation and amendment policy on your chosen product before confirming payment.

  • Yes, the square and monuments are very child‑friendly, but the Leaning Tower has strict rules: children under 8 cannot climb, and ages 8–18 must be accompanied and may need a signed consent form. Families often enjoy ground‑level views, photos, and the cathedral even if not everyone climbs.

  • Piazza dei Miracoli is mostly flat with paved paths, so ground‑level sightseeing is generally manageable. However, the Leaning Tower itself has nearly 300 narrow, sloping steps and no elevator, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs and many mobility or heart conditions. Private or small‑group tours can better adapt walking distances.

  • Pisa‑only tours usually give around 2–3 hours on site—enough for a guided overview, the classic photos, a Tower climb if included, and a brief cathedral or baptistery visit. On multi‑stop Tuscany tours, Pisa time can be closer to 1–1.5 hours, mainly for exterior views and photos.

  • Expect crowds year‑round, with July–August and mid‑day the busiest. “Skip‑the‑line” generally means your Tower ticket is prebooked, so you skip the ticket‑purchase queue. You still go through security and a short entry line for your timeslot. Prebooking mostly reduces waiting and avoids sold‑out climb times.

  • Morning departures usually mean cooler temperatures and slightly thinner crowds at the Tower, especially in summer. Afternoon light can be lovely for photos but is often hotter and busier. If you’re on a half‑day schedule or have a fixed Tower time, morning gives more buffer for any delays.

  • Yes, several full‑day tours combine Pisa with Lucca or towns like Siena and San Gimignano. These are great if you want a “Tuscany sampler” in one day, but time in each stop—especially Pisa—is shorter. If the Leaning Tower climb is a priority, choose a Pisa‑focused itinerary instead.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones and Tower steps, plus sun protection in warmer months as shade in the square is limited. Carry a light cover‑up for cathedral dress codes (shoulders and knees covered). Bags aren’t allowed in the Tower, so keep valuables in pockets or a small pouch.
