Skip the long lines and visit Pisa’s most important monuments, sitting in the beautiful Square of Miracles. Take your time admiring the intricate design of this medieval religious complex.
Pisa Monumental Complex
The Leaning Tower of Pisa was built as a bell tower for the cathedral and made famous for its unique incline. Apart from scenic vistas at the top, admire its timekeeping mechanism – seven bells, varying in size and note! Pisa Cathedral's angelic interiors beckon, from the beautiful black and white marble columns to the gray Corinthian capitals.
The Baptistery of St. John became a site for the Renaissance of sculpture. Stop and stare at the octagonal basin and the zebra work of white and gray marble inside. The double dome of the Baptistery allows for some exceptional acoustics. This is one of the rarer monumental musical instruments you will get to visit.
At the northern edge of the square, you will find the beautiful Camposanto Monumentale or the Monumental Graveyard. This 13th-century site held a large number of frescoes and Roman sarcophagi, until a devastating fire during WWII. The rough sketches of these frescoes were preserved for restoration, and you can see them at the Sinopie Museum!
The Opera del Duomo Museum offers a glimpse of artworks and artifacts that were once on display at the Cathedral and the Baptistery. Notable works include the ivory carving of the Madonna and Child by Giovanni Pisano, several original Gothic and Renaissance sculptures, and a collection of liturgical furnishings and vestments.
