Why You Should Watch Akram Khan Company – XENOS
Based on the suffering of innumerable forgotten and unacknowledged Indian soldiers who fought on Britain’s side in World War I, XENOS is a fascinating confluence of various forms of dance. The story begins at an Indian wedding in which a Kathak dancer is entertaining the audience. The makeshift bulbs flicker frequently, acting as references to the trenches of the First World War. As the wedding decorations fade away with increasing power cuts and brownouts, the sounds of celebration are replaced by the harrowing roar of artillery and sniper rifles on a desolate battlefield. XENOS presents the dream-like experience the dancer goes through as he relives the battles he once fought.
Akram Khan’s incredible choreography manages to express the fragility of human life. Backed by Vincenzo Lamagna’s haunting score, XENOS delves deep into the physical and mental pain of a nameless soldier. Much like Prometheus in Greek mythology, the soldier depicted in Khan’s piece is trapped in an endless cycle of suffering. Michael Hull's brilliant lighting and Kimie Nakano’s costumes perfectly complement Khan’s moving choreography.
