Why watch Oedipus?
Following critically acclaimed and sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival and Internationaal Theatre Amsterdam, Robert Icke's production of Oedipus arrives in London's West End. Olivier award winners Mark Strong and Lesley Manville take center stage, bringing their talent to this fresh interpretation of Sophocles' ancient Greek tragedy reimagined for modern times. Olivier-winning Icke is known for reinventing classing theatre stories to attract younger audiences. These include his adaptations of Oresteia, Mary Stuart, and 1984.
The story
Sophocles' original Oedipus Rex, a cornerstone of Greek tragedy, tells the story of a king unwittingly fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Robert Icke's production opens on a tense election night, with polls predicting a landslide victory. But behind every powerful man is a woman, and Jocasta is no exception. As the truth unfolds, the lines between past and present blur, forcing Oedipus to confront a chilling prophecy and a shocking secret that could shatter everything he holds dear. Will he find redemption, or will his past consume him? Book tickets for Oedipus in London's Wyndham's Theatre to find out!
