Why Watch Singin' In The Rain
Why Watch Singin' In The Rain
Based on the popular 1952 film of the same name, Singin’ in the Rain is a romantic comedy that depicts Hollywood of the 1920s. Despite being only a modest hit when it was first released, the film went on to be accorded legendary status by critics. Currently, it is often considered the greatest musical films ever made, and one of the best films to come out of America.
Director Jonathan Church's staging is splendid, and he brilliantly captures the subtlety and wit of the original that made it so popular. Renowned English actor, dancer and theatre director, Adam Cooper is all set to reprise his role as Dan Lockwood. Cooper is an Olivier Award nominee and was in charge of the choreography for the 2004 production. With Andrew Wright’s choreography, Cooper does a stellar job transitioning from the numerous moods and modes of dance. Cooper brings in the much-needed nonchalance and charm of the main character, leaving no doubt in the mind of the audience that he is the star of the show.
Each song bursts with incredible energy, and the irrepressible joy can be seen within the characters. Simon Higlett’s set design includes an astonishing 14000 litres of water for each performance, to bring Wright’s vision to fruition. The musical features some of the crowd favourite hits, including ‘Moses Supposes’, ‘Make ‘em Laugh’, and the defining ‘Singin’ in the Rain.’
Do not miss the limited run of this delightful production at West End’s Sadler's Wells!
The Story
Dan Lockwood is a successful Hollywood actor, with a slew of successful hits to his name. The humble Don began his career as a stuntman, dancer, and singer. Don is barely able to tolerate the shallow and conniving leading lady of his latest film, Lina Lamont. Their studio, Monumental Pictures, however, links them romantically and Lina becomes convinced that they are in love.
As sound films are all set to become the next big thing, Don has a chance meeting with Kathy Selden, who initially claims to be a stage actress. She turns out to be a talented young chorus girl and soon steals Don’s heart. Is Don’s life about to undergo a monumental change?
