Why Watch Hairspray

Written by Paula Hawkins, The Girl on the Train quickly went on to become a bestselling novel across the world. It was praised for its gripping narrative, its psychological elements, and for the user of unreliable narratives. A movie was released in 2016, with BAFTA-nominated actress Emily Blunt starring as the protagonist.

The stage adaptation stars actress and singer Samantha Womack as Rachel Watson and also Oliver Farnworth. Womack has had an extensive career, with leading roles in Game On and Mount Pleasant, and is best known in Eastlander’s where she played the role of Ronnie Mitchell. Her most famous work on stage is on the musical comedy The Addams Family, where played Morticia Addams. Oliver Farnworth’s credentials include roles on Coronation Street and Hollyoaks, and recently, the TV series Endeavour. Anthony Banks does a stellar job with the direction and pace, and you are left guessing all the way until the end. The narrative is gripping, with numerous twists throughout and is guaranteed to leave you at the edge of your seat!

The Story

Rachel Watson commutes via the London tube every day and longs for a different life. During her daily commute, her only escape is observing a couple living in one of the houses that the train passes by. In her mind, the couple is perfect as they are happy, satisfied and absolutely in love with each other. She runs this narrative in her mind every day as she passes by their home. One of the causes for her daydreams as she travels the train is the end of her marriage to Tom, who lives in one of the buildings near the home of her couple. In reality, Rachel is depressed and has turned to alcohol, which has resulted in the loss of her job and frequent blackouts.

One day, however, she learns that the woman she has been watching is missing. She has also glimpsed the very same woman kissing a man who was not her husband on a previous occasion, shattering her impression about the couple. Soon enough, Rachel finds herself to be a witness and suspect in this mystery. As she attempts to uncover the truth of the woman’s disappearance through her own investigation, she learns far bigger secrets than she could have ever imagined. Will Rachel escape unscathed in this ordeal that she has gotten herself into? Will her idealistic impression about the couple be shattered as she delves into this mystery?
