Shen Te, a native of Szechwan who is described as having a kind heart despite her lack of wealth, serves as the story's main character in the play The Good Person of Szechwan. She starts dressing up as a man only after the gods bless her and the neighbours steal everything from her. She starts a tobacco shop with the intention of helping the less fortunate, only to have her generosity exploited on several occasions. As Shen Te struggles to maintain her integrity in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, the drama dives into issues of morality and ethics. The play, at its centre, investigates the meaning of morality in the context of a harsh and cruel society. Who came out on top, those who fought for good or for evil, or neither? This is the conundrum that Shen Te faces on a daily basis as she strives to survive in the consumerist culture in which we live. The 80th anniversary of Brecht's play is being commemorated with a new version adapted by Nina Segal, directed by Anthony Lau, with music composed by DJ Walde, and starring a cast that was recruited by Jacob Sparrow.
