Why Watch Light in the Piazza
Why Watch Light in the Piazza
The winner of 6 prestigious Tony Awards, Light in the Piazza is one of the most well-known shows to be showcased at the West End. Rather than featuring the same old pop-infused score that is typical of most modern musicals, an unusually dramatic and beautiful classical score awaits the audience. The plot is from a 1960s novel by Elizabeth Spencer but is set in the 1950s, in the charming city of Florence.
Directed by multiple Olivier and Tony Award-winner Daniel Evans, you are all set to be transported to one of the most delightful eras of Italy. The lead roles are played by West End debutants Renee Fleming, a Tony Award-nominee for her role in Carousel, and Dove Cameron of Disney Channel fame. With a talented 40-member orchestra live on-stage, The Light In The Piazza promises to be an unforgettable theatre experience for drama and music lovers alike.
The Story
Mother and daughter Margaret and Clara are in Florence for a vacation. Margaret is quite protective of her young daughter, owing to the fact that Clara was kicked in the head by a pony at the age of 12. As a result, her social and psychological development is slightly hampered. Clara, however, is absolutely nonchalant about this and refuses to let anything keep her down. As fate would have it, a gust of wind blows Clara’s hat into the hands of the spirited and handsome Fabrizio Naccarelli, and it's love at first sight for the couple.
Although Margaret is quite dissuasive of the match, the Naccarelli family immediately take a liking to Clara. Everyone, from Fabrizio's fiery sister-in-law to his big-hearted father and affable mother, approves of their relationship. Watch how this story of love and acceptance blooms into a brilliant conclusion!
