Why watch Unicorn
Why watch Unicorn
Love, like unicorns, is rare and magical. But this play isn’t about that kind of unicorn. Romance is never a cookie-cutter affair, as the play deftly examines. Unicorn has the guts to tackle the tough issues about freedom and commitment about polyamory on stage, a subject that is seldom handled with this level of candor and complexity. James McDonald's sensitive direction brings out all the drama, comedy, and sadness in Bartlett's writing.
Unicorn is an outstanding blend of romance, drama and comedy: the perfect emotional rollercoaster. Anyone looking for a night of top-tier theater, a lover of Bartlett and Macdonald's work, or an exploration of unconventional love tales will find plenty to enjoy in this play.
The story
In Unicorn, we follow the apparently ideal pair Polly and Nick as they explore polyamory. Even though they're happy, secure, and have a family, they still feel that something is missing. Kate, a third party whose entrance into their lives questions their conceptions of love, trust, and desire, provides the spark they've been seeking.
By delving into topics like infidelity, social expectations, and the complexities of a relationship with a third partner, the play manages to be both funny and thought-provoking. As is typical of Bartlett's work, the story deftly blends humor and heartfelt moments to provide readers with an insightful look at modern love.
