Why Watch Upstart Crow
Why Watch Upstart Crow
Upstart Crow is a brand new stage adaptation of the historic BBC sitcom of the same name. Written by Ben Elton, the play marks David Mitchell's West End debut. Mitchell and his co-star Gemma Whelan reprise their roles from the TV series as Will Shakespeare and Kate respectively. The hilarious play is set in 1605 when Shakespeare had only written All's Well That Ends Well and Measure for Measure and chronicles his struggles to write his big hit. If you are looking for a light-hearted comedy with a crazy plot and outstanding performances, Upstart Crow is the show for you.
The Story
The play begins in the year 1605. Will Shakespeare, a promising playwright, whose last two plays were ridiculed by King James. Desperate for a new play to bolster his reputation and avoid the King's wrath, Shakespeare finds more trouble at home! His landlord's daughter, Kate, wants to become an actor, his own daughters are running amok and an old waif and stray have taken refuge in his house. With a personal life that's more eventful and dramatic than any play he could dream up, Shakespeare finds it increasingly difficult to put pen to paper. Will be able to overcome his family woes and fulfill his destiny of being the greatest playwright of all time or will he crumble under pressure and never write his masterpiece. Watch the outright hilarious Upstart Crow and find out!
